Things to Do in Phuket

20 places worth visiting — from tourist classics to hidden spots only locals know about. No fluff, just addresses and timing tips.

After four years on the island, I've seen it all — from overcrowded attractions to places that even long-time residents don't know about. Here are 20 spots that are genuinely worth your time, ranked from the most popular to the lesser-known.

What Can You Do in Phuket for Free?

1. Promthep Cape — The Best Sunset

Promthep Cape is the southern tip of Phuket island and the single best spot to watch the sunset. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset and grab a spot on the rocks above the lighthouse — the panoramic views of the Andaman Sea, Racha Island in the distance, and the sky turning orange are breathtaking. Free entry, free parking. There is a small elephant shrine at the top and a lighthouse museum you can visit. Be warned: monkeys live on the cape and are aggressive about stealing food and phones. Keep everything in a closed bag. Sunset times vary from 6:10 PM in December to 6:45 PM in June. After sunset, head 3 minutes south to Nai Harn for dinner.

2. Old Town

Phuket Old Town is the cultural heart of the island, centered around Thalang Road and Soi Romanee. The area features beautifully preserved Sino-Portuguese colonial architecture from the 19th-century tin mining era — pastel-colored shophouses, ornate facades, and Chinese shrines. Walk along Soi Romanee for the most photogenic street in Phuket. The neighborhood has excellent independent coffee shops, galleries, and small museums like the Thai Hua Museum (entry 200 THB). Visit in the morning before 10 AM to avoid the heat. Every Sunday evening, the Walking Street Market takes over Thalang Road with street food, crafts, and live music — it's the best free evening activity on the island.

3. Big Buddha

A 45-meter white statue on a hilltop, visible from anywhere in southern Phuket. Free entry, but your clothes must cover shoulders and knees (they provide wraps at the entrance). Panoramic views of three bays.

4. Karon Viewpoint — Three Bays

A viewpoint between Kata and Karon beaches. You can see three beaches at once — Kata Noi, Kata, and Karon. Best in the morning or at sunset. Parking and coconut stalls on site.

5. Wat Chalong

Phuket's main Buddhist temple. Beautiful pagodas, peaceful atmosphere, and inside — fragments of Buddha's bones (according to legend). Free entry. Remove your shoes before entering.

6. Naka Weekend Market

A massive market open on Saturdays and Sundays. Food, clothes, souvenirs, live music. Thai street food runs 40–80 THB per dish. Come around 5 PM when it cools down. GPS: "Naka Weekend Market".

7. Freedom Beach

A tropical cove you reach via a jungle trail or by boat. More details in our article Best Beaches in Phuket.

8. Cape Panwa — The Quiet East

The eastern coast, far from the tourist crowds. The rooftop bar Baba Nest is one of the best sunset bars in Asia. Nearby — Cape Panwa Hotel with a beach and an aquarium.

9. Banana Beach

A hidden beach tucked between cliffs. The Nai Harn Banana Beach restaurant sits on the cliff above. Walk down the stairs — and you'll find a little paradise. Few people, crystal-clear water.

10. Bang Pae Waterfall

A small waterfall in the jungle on the north of the island. You can swim in a natural pool. Nearby — the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project. Entry fee: 200 THB.

Which Excursions Are Worth Booking in Phuket?

11. Phi Phi Islands

A classic. Maya Bay from "The Beach" with Leonardo DiCaprio, snorkeling, and lunch on Phi Phi Don. A full-day trip. Tours from 1,700 THB.

12. Similan Islands

The best snorkeling in Thailand. Open only from November to May. It's a long ride (3 hours), but absolutely worth it. Details and prices.

13. James Bond Island

The iconic rock from "The Man with the Golden Gun". Beautiful, but crowded. A speedboat tour is your best bet — you'll get there faster and avoid the biggest crowds. Itinerary and prices.

14. Khao Sok

A national park with Cheow Lan Lake. Floating bungalows, jungle, limestone cliffs. Available as a 1- or 2-day trip. One of the most beautiful places in all of Thailand. 1-day tour or 2-day tour with overnight stay.

15. Phuket Sightseeing Tour

If it's your first time on the island, you can cover all the key spots in a single day: Big Buddha, Promthep, Old Town, Wat Chalong, and the viewpoints. Much easier with a guide. Itinerary.

Shows & Entertainment

16. Siam Niramit

A spectacular show about Thai culture. 150 performers, special effects, elephants on stage. The best show on the island, in my opinion. Tickets and prices.

17. Carnival Magic

A new park by the creators of Fantasea. Carnival, shows, and a parade. Truly impressive. Learn more.

18. Hanuman World

A zipline adventure through the jungle — 28 platforms, sky bridges, and descents. Adrenaline plus views. Tickets from 1,800 THB.

19. Andamanda Water Park

Opened in 2022. Water slides, a wave pool, a lazy river. Great for families with kids. Tickets from 1,600 THB.

20. Simon Cabaret

A famous cabaret show — a Phuket trademark. Dazzling costumes, dancing, and music. Fun and lighthearted. Tickets and schedule.
