Phuket Weather by Month

I live on the island year-round and see the weather firsthand every single day. Here's an honest breakdown — month by month, with temperatures and real advice.

Phuket is a tropical island. It's warm here all year round, even during the "cool" season. Air temperature stays between 28–35 °C (82–95 °F) throughout the year, and sea water is 27–30 °C (81–86 °F). But there are real differences between months — and they matter.

There are two seasons: the dry season (November–April) and the rainy season (May–October). But "rainy" doesn't mean it pours all day. Typically it's a short tropical downpour lasting an hour or two, followed by sunshine again.

Weather data sourced from Open-Meteo and based on 4 years of personal observation. Tide data from World Tides.

High Season: November–April

November

A transitional month. Rain still happens, but less frequently. The sea calms down and beaches reopen. Prices are lower than in December. A great time for those who prefer fewer crowds.

December

The start of the perfect season. Dry, warm, and the sea is as calm as a lake. Around New Year's — everything is packed and prices double. If you're flying in for the holidays, book everything 2–3 months in advance.

January–February

Peak season. The best weather of the year. Almost no rain, crystal-clear sea. Tours to the Similans and Phi Phi Islands are at their best. The downside — accommodation prices are at their highest.

March

Hot. Temperatures reach 35 °C (95 °F) — the hottest month of the year. Warm sea, almost no wind. A good month overall, but SPF 50 sunscreen is absolutely essential. Seriously.

April

Songkran (Thai New Year, April 13–15) — everyone splashes water on each other in the streets. Great fun, but scorching hot. By the end of the month, the first rains begin. Still a good time for a vacation.

Low Season: May–October

May

The rains begin. Usually afternoon downpours lasting 1–2 hours. Mornings are sunny. Prices drop 30–50%. If you're okay with some rain, it's a solid time for a budget-friendly holiday.

June–August

The main rainy season. But this isn't London in November. It doesn't rain all day — typically a heavy tropical downpour for an hour, then it's warm again. Western beaches get waves and red flags. It's safe to swim at sheltered beaches — Ya Nui, Ao Sane, and the east coast.

September–October

The wettest months. It can rain for two or three days straight. The sea gets murky and you can't swim at western beaches. On the flip side — minimal tourists, the lowest prices, and empty restaurants. Snowbirds and long-term travelers start arriving.

What Is the Best Month to Visit Phuket?

  • First time in Phuket: December–March
  • On a budget: May or November
  • Long-term winter stay: November–April
  • Surfing: June–September
  • Best to avoid: September–October (if beaches matter to you)

What Should You Pack for Phuket?

  • SPF 50 sunscreen — you'll burn in 40 minutes, I'm not exaggerating
  • A lightweight rain jacket (if visiting May–November)
  • A hoodie or sweater for air conditioning — malls are kept at 18 °C (64 °F)
  • Sandals, not sneakers — your feet will get wet
